Have you ever thought about how complex advertising can be online? With different ways of advertising online, you can often get lost in deciding what is best for your business. It has become a popular part of digital marketing, and in fact, it is almost uncommon for a company to not have a digital marketing strategy. But here is the scary part. A lot of companies get into it, but end up failing and losing thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars. But why?

The answer is simple. Their keyword list was not good. You can say “How can a bad keyword list affect your strategy so much?” That is what we are answering in this article. We will discuss why keywords are so important, which ones are best for you, and how to create a list that will work. Let’s dive right into it!

What are Keywords and Why are they Important?

Keywords are the words or phrases people type into Google to help find what they are looking for. You may be asking, why are they important? Keywords are important for the advertiser because they help you understand what your target market is searching for, and based on that, you can tailor your keywords to catch their attention. When it comes to types of keywords, there are two variations of keywords: Short keywords and long tail keywords.

Short keywords are as the name says, which is one or two terms that you search in Google. These kinds of keywords can be beneficial if you are looking for many different variations and options of what you are looking for. For example, if you are looking for Adidas shoes, you would search “Adidas shoes”, and then the Google search would pop up every single type of Adidas shoe as well as every single retailer who sells Adidas shoes.

The other type of keyword is long tail keywords, which are three or more terms in your search. This kind of keyword is better if you know exactly what you want and are looking for a more specific option to meet your needs. For example, if you are looking for a specific type of Adidas shoe at a store, you would search for something like “Adidas Ultraboost 1.0 all-black shoes at Footlocker”. The search is more than three terms and it is very specific to the type of shoe, the color of the shoe, and the store in which the person wants to buy the shoe from.

How to Use the Best Keywords for Your Digital Marketing Strategy?

Playing with keywords can be a tricky thing. You can spend hours looking at keyword lists from websites and see which keywords are better in certain areas than others, and then when you use them, they don’t bring you the same results. Why?

When choosing keywords that would be best for your digital marketing strategy, you must first start with the basics. We will use a home remodeling company as an example, but all of this information can be applied to your kind of industry. First, decide on what you want to target. Do you want to get more potential customers using the keyword “kitchen remodel” or are you targeting a different area of remodeling like “bathroom remodel”? No matter what you choose, the first few keywords you choose have to be basic short keywords. (discussed earlier in the article)

Once you create a list of all the short keywords you would like to target, you then start to broaden your horizon and look for long-tail keywords that correspond with your original list of short keywords. For example, if you are targeting kitchen remodeling, start with:
  • kitchen remodel
  • kitchen remodeling
  • kitchen renovations
  • kitchen reno
  • kitchen renos…

This would be the kind of list you start with, and then from there, you create a list like this, which relates to the list above:

  • kitchen remodeling contractors near me
  • kitchen remodel pros in my area
  • kitchen renovation contractors
  • kitchen remodel companies
  • luxury kitchen remodel companies in my area…

You should have a pretty good-sized keyword list you could use for your digital marketing strategy. These are just a few variations of keywords, but you should have a lot more, and the keywords you use, should be relatively similar. That way you can cover all search variations that a potential customer could look up.

After a few weeks or so, you should be able to see the results that you get from your keywords. Based on what kind of results you receive, should be the indicator of how your keywords are doing. If you are happy with your results, then keep going!

Start adding more new keywords to help get you even more potential leads. If it’s the opposite and you are getting little to no potential leads or clicks, then it’s time to go back to the drawing board. Which keywords are getting clicks? Should I target even more specifically or maybe I should broaden my keywords to attract a larger target market? All these questions you need to be asking yourself.

Are you ready to construct your online presence? Let’s get building!

A well-designed website is an invaluable asset for your construction company. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about providing valuable information and fostering trust with prospective clients.

Combining Good Keywords with Good Content

As previously said, a good keyword list is very important, but it is only as good as the content you combine it with. The big difference that helps a person who is just looking something up turn into a customer is the content that catches their eye. With a proper keyword list, you can get your ad to show up when they search a certain keyword or certain phrase, but with the addition of a great quality ad, you can increase the number of people who click on your ad dramatically. And it takes no genius to know that the more clicks, the better the chances are of having someone convert.

Referring back to what we talked about with keywords, we will continue with examples using a company in the home remodeling industry. Let’s say the company creates a great keyword list targeting kitchen remodels. To create an ad with great content, you’ll need to offer something that your competitors do not offer. For example, for a kitchen remodel ad, you can use content like:
  • We’ll get your kitchen remodeled in 2 weeks!
  • Call us before 10/2 to receive 10% off your kitchen remodel!
  • Looking to remodel your kitchen but don’t have a big budget? Thats alright! Give us a call!
  • With 50+ five-star reviews, let our kitchen remodel expertise show in your next kitchen remodel
  • Choose a company that knows what they are doing with kitchen remodels, choose us! We have over 20+ years of experience.

These are just a few examples of content you can add to your ads, all of which use the “kitchen remodel” keyword. And all of these examples of ad content are different in some way, targeting a different kind of unique characteristic of the company. This is just an example, but you can do that for all of your good keywords. Use variations of the main keyword in your ads, so that it can better target the person who is searching for what you are offering.

One thing to remember is that like keywords, it is never a set the ad content once and you are done. It is constant revisions, constant improvement, keeping up with trends, and promoting your company in ways that set you apart from your competitors. So combining good keywords with good content is a process, but when you find the winning formula, the results will come flowing in!

Overall, to create the best keyword list for your digital marketing strategy just comes with time and monitoring to see what keywords you can add or take away. Making a keyword list is not a one-and-done kind of deal. It’s constant change and constant improvement. Even when everything is looking good, you can always make it better. When will it be good enough? When you take over the whole market, and we all know that is impossible.

Don’t wait, Create your Perfect Keyword list!

There is no easy way to create a perfect keyword list. It not only takes hours of research and finding all the variations of a keyword which you want to target, but it is constantly improving and testing to see if something works. Our goal from this article is to help you get started on creating a keyword list that will help your business flourish. But also to reassure you that your keyword list will not be perfect after one try, but that it will be perfected with consistent improvements and revisions. We don’t want you to end up like other companies who have no idea what they are doing and they end up losing thousands of dollars because their keyword list was not good. We hope this article helps!
